One idea. That was all it took. Just one idea. I learned a method for crafting an after-school program at a local private school. It seemed silly to me... but... read more I figured I'd test it. So I just crafted a way to try it out and see for myself. And it was an instant success. I was shocked. I figured that maybe it was that it was novel... but, nope, most of them signed up for the next session, and more came. In time, it was 20% of our income running an offsite program. So we added another after school program at another nearby private school. And at about that time we can an economic crash in the neighborhood of the main dojo. That program carried us through. Without it, it would have been over decades ago. Were 100% of the idea good fits and home runs? No. But when you consider that just one of them was the difference between in-business or out-of-business... that is WELL worth it. When the business-side of martial arts isn't our mastery, it can be a lot like going to martial arts seminars where the visiting master teaches us five new techniques. Maybe one of them is already a perfect fit for our style and dojo. Maybe one more can be adapted. Maybe three of them are interesting, but they don't quite fit. The VALUE is in finding what you can use that is transformational instead of complaining about the few that aren't a good fit. If you're that kind of martial artist, then working with John Graden will advance your business skills tremendously. That's my take.
